ActNow is a project developed under the TAPAS network (https://tapasnetwork.co.uk). TAPAS brings together air quality professionals, educators, local and national government advisers and others with the goal to Tackle Air Pollution At Schools, to reduce exposure to pollutants and improve the health of school communities.
Air pollution affects all schools and more importantly their pupils and staff. According to the UK’s leading respiratory charities, more than a quarter of all British schools and colleges are located in areas which have dangerously high levels of air pollution. COVID-19 has reinforced more than ever the importance of healthy lungs and it's our responsibility to ensure the next generation has clean air to breathe.
ActNow recognises that action is needed now to protect those in schools, and provides both an introduction to air quality management and detailed information on introducing a small number of measures that should be effective but not require significant input of time or money. It does not seek to provide a complete solution, but provides a solid foundation for understanding air pollution at school and starting to improve air quality. We hope that schools will find it useful and go on to take further action, for example using the Clean Air for Schools Framework (https://www.transform-our-world.org/programmes/clean-air-for-schools).
